Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the giant floating island kingdom of Althea, the value of human life is quantified through a number called a “Count” given to each person at birth which changes based on any important number related to their life, like the number of kilometers walked or the number of times someone is complimented. In this world, those with a higher Count are given authority to order around anyone with a lower Count, who are forbidden from refusing even if obeying would mean their death. If someone’s Count reaches 0, they are dragged down into the Abyss, a mysterious place said to be a worse punishment than death itself. Hina is a young girl who has devoted her life to finding the Legendary Ace to fulfill her mother’s last wish before she was taken to the Abyss. After five years of fruitless searching, her luck changes when she meets a strange masked knight known as Licht Bach who, surprisingly, has a negative Count.
In Vol. 5, those who lose their stars will be expelled, but Licht doesn’t care about the school’s harsh rule since he has on intention of becoming a soldier. But when he sees that his classmates are forcibly deprived of their stars, and even his best friend Tokikaze is robbed of his star, Licht begins working with Jail to get everyone’s stars back. The School Arc is in full swing!
