Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the giant floating island kingdom of Althea, the value of human life is quantified through a number called a “Count” given to each person at birth which changes based on any important number related to their life, like the number of kilometers walked or the number of times someone is complimented. In this world, those with a higher Count are given authority to order around anyone with a lower Count, who are forbidden from refusing even if obeying would mean their death. If someone’s Count reaches 0, they are dragged down into the Abyss, a mysterious place said to be a worse punishment than death itself. Hina is a young girl who has devoted her life to finding the Legendary Ace to fulfill her mother’s last wish before she was taken to the Abyss. After five years of fruitless searching, her luck changes when she meets a strange masked knight known as Licht Bach who, surprisingly, has a negative Count.
In Vol. 10, Taketora says he saw some of his friends from Class A who were supposed to be dead. In order to find out the truth, Licht and his friends decide to sneak into the royal capital in search of the original ballot. At the same time, a conspiracy is swirling in the royal capital…
