Takao Kasuga is an introverted middle school student and bookworm whose favorite book is Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal. He is infatuated with a girl in his class named Nanako Saeki whom he idolizes from afar as his muse. One day after school, he returns to his classroom alone after forgetting his book there and finds Nanako’s gym clothes, which he impulsively steals. Word begins spreading around school that a pervert stole Nanko’s clothes, and Takao is wracked with guilt and shame. Worse than that, though, is the fact that fellow classmate Sawa Nakamura, a cold, contemptuous girl whom everyone in class ignores, saw him in the act. In order to keep his secret hidden, he enters into a “contract” with her in which he must do anything she says, no matter how unreasonable.
In Vol. 11, having learned where Sawa is, Takao heads to a peaceful town by the sea to visit her. He believed in her back then and that they would escape the “sea of shit-bugs” together, but then the summer festival happened. Even though it’s been over 3 years, he can’t seem to move on from that moment. Will he find the answers he’s looking for? And will he still make it to “the other side”?
