Chihaya Ayase was in middle school when she met the transfer student Arata Wataya who helped spark her passion for karuta. Circumstances unfortunately separated the childhood friends. Now a high school student, Chihaya wants to not only found a karuta club, but also become the best karuta player in Japan! She also hopes to be reunited with her childhood friend Arata.
Written and illustrated by Yuki Suetsugu, serialized in Be Love since 2007, and published by Kodansha into 32 volumes as of July 2016, Chihayafuru has won the Manga Taisho Award and the Kodansha Manga Award as well as boosted the popularity of competitive karuta in Japan.
