Yatora Yaguchi is a second-year high school student who excels academically but is utterly bored with life and feels an inner emptiness. However, all that changes when he discovers the joy of painting. After becoming deeply enthralled by a painting he sees at his school’s art club, he decides to try his hand at the art form, thus opening a whole new colorful world of expression. He soon joins the art club and decides to pursue art for a living, but not all agree with his unique life choice and many obstacles stand in his way to achieving his newfound dream.
In Vol. 8, after passing the entrance exam to Tokyo University of the Arts, Yaguchi visits a museum with other students who are studying painting in order to work on their “scenes of Tokyo” assignment. Though his motivation is low at first, the more he learns about the history of Tokyo, the more fired up he gets, and he decides to paint Shibuya. However, with so much information to wade through, he struggles to compose his work.
